About Halal Food AI
A small, focused team building AI-powered tools that help Muslim families shop with confidence.
What we do
Halal Food AI is a mobile app, available on iOS and Android, that checks whether food products comply with Islamic dietary law. We combine three signals into a single answer:
- Barcode scanning against the Open Food Facts database — millions of products contributed and verified by a global community.
- Photo and text analysis powered by Google Gemini, which extracts ingredients straight from a label and classifies each one.
- A comprehensive E-code database covering hundreds of food additives, with halal status and source notes updated continuously.
For each scan, the app returns a halal / suspect / not halal classification with a per-ingredient explanation. Where any ingredient is ambiguous (vague terms like natural flavors or enzymes), we flag it as suspect and explain why, rather than guess.
Why we built it
Reading ingredient labels is harder than it should be. Manufacturers aren't required to disclose the source of every ingredient — only its functional name. So the same word on a label can mean something halal or something haram, with no way to tell from the packaging alone. Halal Food AI exists to close that gap, in seconds, in 25+ languages.
Methodology & trust
- Multiple sources, not a single oracle. Every classification is cross-referenced between the database, AI output, and our E-code list. When sources disagree we surface the conflict rather than hide it.
- Continuously updated. Open Food Facts updates in real time; our E-code rules and AI prompts are reviewed on a rolling basis as new edge cases appear.
- Always verify in person. AI is fast and consistent, but a damaged or unclear label can mislead any system. We always recommend reading the physical packaging for critical decisions.
- Privacy by default. No traditional account, no email harvesting, scan history stored on-device. Photos sent for analysis are deleted immediately unless you explicitly save the product to a list. See our Privacy Policy for the full picture.
