GİMDES Gıda ve İhtiyaç Maddeleri Denetleme ve Sertifikalandırma Araştırmaları Derneği
GİMDES is a Turkish halal certification association that certifies food products and slaughterhouses against its own published standard. That standard allows stunning only for poultry and forbids mechanical-blade slaughter of poultry in any form.
What the mark looks like
GİMDES logos are registered with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, and their use on packaging, certificates and promotional material is governed by a published usage instruction. GİMDES states that improper use of its logo will be pursued through legal proceedings.
What they certify, and what they do not
- Food products, listed publicly on the GİMDES certified products site
- Slaughterhouses, which apply through a separate abattoir application
- Both against the GİMDES Halal Standard, which is published in full rather than summarised
Where they stand on the two disputed questions
- Stunning
- Poultry only
- Machine slaughter
- Not permitted for poultry
- Covers
- Food and drink
How to check a certificate is genuine
- Search the certified products list linked from gimdes.org
- Read the published GİMDES Halal Standard, which states each slaughter requirement by section number
- Use the complaints and objections procedure on gimdes.org if a mark looks wrong
Bottom line
GİMDES forbids mechanical-blade slaughter of poultry in any form, yet allows stunning for poultry, which HMC and AVS both refuse. So a GİMDES mark and an HMC mark do not mean the same thing, even though both are strict.
